I know what it says....
This just from Va High AD ... I called him (Barry Reed) Gate City game has been moved to Va High @ 2pm!
Virginia High will play at 4pm at John Battle!
[/ QUOTE ]
I've known Barry my entire life...our families were very good friends, went to church together, one of his sisters and I were in the same class...good guy (and family for that matter)!
it has nothing to do with screwing southwest va. people. it has everything to do with seating. va. high's gym is a perfect venue for a state game especially with 3 schools being represented on saturday.
Thatd been perfect for GC a game in Johnson City. I figured they had moved the game to Thompson Bolling by now.
GC does have the right to pick the venue being Region D Champs. However, by requesting their boys/girls State games to be played in the same location means 3 schools fans will be seated in the same gym like last weekend. This created a major cluster jam at Castlewood H.S. I attended those 2 games last Saturday at CHS and the place was packed. It is a nice gym but looked like it had exceeded its capacity. For 2 games, the bleachers became very uncomfortable as you could not get up to move around, and the parking was unacceptable for games of this magnitude. CHS parking is virtually one way in/out parking and did not have anyone assisting with traffic after the game. It took me 25 minutes to leave off the hill. As much as I hate to admit it, I think it is a great move for all fans atending these 2 upcoming games. The VHS gym has individual seating and multiple parking areas. I'd say playing a doubleheader and the situation from last week is probably what contributed greatly to this move. The CHS gym is very nice, but the place proved to me last week it is not very appropriate. Has any VHSL H.S. ever been allowed to play a State doubleheader? Sounds like GC is lucky to be allowed. Good luck to both Devils boys and girls teams, keep rolling to the BIG HOUSE at Richmond!!! I can't imagine having any of these problems there, ha ha!
So Floyd and Radford will bring in more fans than homestanding Castlewood, Twin Valley, and Burton did on Friday? Or more than CW, and Kelly Saturday?
If people tink that parking is bad at Castlewood. Wait til they get to Va high, With the new track there is very limited parking and now if you park on the street you WILL get towed. I wonder if GW gets to bring their on stripes. They had their own ref in the State semi football game last time.

1. There is 3 parking lots at VHS to my knowledge...one right at the school and in front. A student parking lot and another behind the school at the track. Way more parking then at Castlewood IMO.
2. To my knowledge, you can't park on the streets during school hours. Meaning you can park on the street during non-school hours.
3. You will not be towed unless you have something blocked as always, anywhere you go
When Oak Hill played there this year after the VHS girls and boys played, the gym was packed from what I heard and saw on the news later that night. VHS hosted 3 games that night back to back to back!
There will be plenty of parking. You may have to walk a little bit but it will not take you 20-30 minutes to get out like it did last weekend at CW. That was horrible, from the time I left the gym to my house it took me almost and hour and a half for a 35 mile drive!
It will be better for everyone LITERALLY from ever point of view!
Ok, first of all George Wythe lost and then they go and complain to VHSL that they cant drive that far. Even if the seating was the case Castlewood has more seating than VA High anyway. I believe 2 years ago Twin Springs played George Wythe at Castlewood and there no complaints. This is rediculous on VHSL's part because Gate City earned the right to choose Castlewood, George Wythe lost.
Is there any true proof that GW has made the complaint or is everyone jumping to conclusions?

???? WTF? Not that I have counted seats or anything but there is no way in heck Castlewood has more seating.
I do however think GC should have a bit more control over where the games are played (I assume that the double header is the reason the VHSL stepped in?)
My only problem is the time. It sucks that the GW--GC game is at the same time as the Va. High girls game at John Battle. I would have loved to see the GW--GC game. All of the other AA girls quarter final games are Friday Night. I'm sure that the VHSL will make plenty of money at Va. High but they would have made more if those two games were played at different times. I'm not a fan of GW or GC but I am a fan of basketball and would have enjoyed seeing it.
first and foremost the rules clearly say that the winner of the region gets to pick the site I just think it was stupid of GW to complain and get the game moved.
Castlewood does have a very nice gym, but it has nowhere near the seating that Va. High has.
I just think it was low of GW to complain, and I can see why coach V wanted to play there GC won three straight in that gym and had a very good fan turn out.
If the thought is G.W. is complaining then the answer is simple. Have Gate City's girls play at Va High and Gate City's boys play at Castlewood. From what i'm reading its more G.W. than Radford. Simple plan, why does Gate City need both their girls and boys playing in the same location?? I don't remember seeing there was a rule about that. If the problem for Castlewood is 3 schools and 4 teams being to many then just have 2 teams there. Has no one thought of this or MUST THERE BE BOTH GATE CITY TEAM'S AT THE SAME VENUE. If you feel that you must have both then go to Va High and stop complaining, if you would seperate then have one at Va High and one at Castlewood.
if the girls play after the boys at the same location you will have more fans come out for Gc instead of some going to the girls game and some going to the boys game.

I think GC would have a good fan turn out no matter where it was to be played. CW, VHS or anywhere else for that matter
The GC Devil fan base will travel anywhere to watch their teams in Blue play! From what I saw, they out numbered the other team in blue this past Saturday in their own Gym!
What can i say we love our devils, and I will be front row center of the stundent section saturday.

WOOT WOOT! haha
that wasn't me that game.
Some seem to have lost sight of what's important here.
1. Both boys and girls were region champs and each should be able to choose where to play.
2. This is not about convenience for the fans, the other schools or the VHSL - this is about the kids.
3. The VHSL should go by the rules and not make exceptions when it benifits them or their buddies.
I totally agree with what you say GC won they should choose.

Gate City did offer to split the games, girls on Fri. and boys Sat. at CW and Sisson flat out refused, also tried Clinchco and was again refused. The good old VH$L was determined for VA High which is where the GW coach had tried to get the game since it was announced at CW Monday.
I ask again! Is there any true proof that GW has made the complaint or is everyone jumping to conclusions? GIVE ME SOLID PROOF!!!!!!!!!
They are playing GC they MUST be Whining (Sorry I could not resist )

I did not see this post. So they are complaining?
Kinda reminds me of a Region D football championship that JIB got to pick the site and wanted to play at UVA Wise. Twin Springs didnt want to and the game was played in Norton.
Heck as soon as GC wins its first Region title in 8 or 9 years, everybody starts complaining and whinning. Why is everybody against GC, they have done nothing but win, so respect them. Twin springs got to pick and so did twin valley, no question there. Give GC a break people. GC wins = pissed off people.
If GW complained or not is not the problem. Who cares if they complained. The problem is GC has the right to choose where to play and were denied that right. The arrogant and unfair practices of the VHSL are to blame.
Gezzzzzzz, it is too easy to post on this board now that you have to login to view it.
So GC is playing both games a Virginia High. Not the players choice, but does the VHSL care about that? No way! These kids are the winners of Region D, but did not get to choose where to play the state quarterfinals, the VHSL made the choice for them. I hope the kids, both the boys and the girls, will show they are true champions and win both games. Oh by the way, tickets are on sale at the GCHS office.
I doubt the VHSL moved the games for them.
Umm since the Region D tourney ther has been talk of moving the game from Castlwodd to Virginia High becuz that is where the girls wanted to play.
The decision was more than likely made by the teams coaches and the school. The VHSL cannot determine where you play your game as long as it is a neutral site.
And the reason the Floyyd county J.J Kelly game was postponed was becuz of a death in the family of the Floyyd County head coach, so it was moved back to SAt.
I guess you missed this earlier in the thread:
GROUP A STATE QUARTERFINAL BASKETBALL SITE AND DATE CHANGES
Accommodations made in anticipation of large crowds
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Joyce Sisson,
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA ? The Group A girls and boys basketball quarterfinal match-ups originally scheduled to take place at Castlewood High School on Saturday March 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. will instead take place at Virginia High School, game day and time unchanged. For the girls game, Gate City will play Radford and for the boys game, Gate City will play George Wythe.
High pre-game ticket sales prompted VHSL Assistant Director Joyce Sisson to make this change. "With a 2,500 seat gymnasium, Virginia is better equipped to handle the number of spectators that are expected to attend."
MONEY! thats the only reason the VHSL moved the game. They thought that GW and Radford would bring more fans if they just had to travel 81. VA High gets no money except for consecsions, the rest goes straight to the VHSL.

Who is complaining about GC? I am just wanting solid proof that GW is whining. And I too think we should choose where we want to play. I think we should play it at GC because we earned the right to host it. Just sell the tickets to capacity of our gym and who dont get it then tough luck.
You can't host state basketball quarterfinals at your home venue, no one in the state is allowed to do so. I do agree that Gate City should be allowed to host where they wish to do so, as long as that gym has been accredited for regional/quarterfinal usage - which Castlewood is and has been. Twin Springs played George Wythe at Castlewood in 2004, and we all know what a big crowd the Red Army brings to their basketball games, especially on the state level. If Castlewood was large enough to handle that matchup, it would be no problem to handle Saturday's crowd in attendance.
I have no doubts whatsoever that Castlewood would have been acceptable in seating capacity. I also agree with others that it was moved by the VHSL on the request of one of the visting schools for whatever reason. Ms. Sisson's press statement just leads one to believe that even more, given her reasoning for doing so. Since the girls game is first and knowing the Radford athletic department representatives, I can guarantee it wasn't by their request. Also, given the information from GC1 - which happens to be a very reliable source from my understanding when it comes to GC basketball and Coach Vermillion - I don't think he's lying or fabricating the truth with what he has said about who was trying to have the venue moved and when that request was first mentioned.
Bottom line, good luck to the Lady Indians and Lady Devils, as well as the Devils of Castlewood & Gate City. Represent our Region well!
Thank you redrain. Trust me that the GW coach has been trying to get the venue changed since it was announced Monday. And the Gate City coaches had NOTHING to do with it being changed. Coach V fought tooth and nail to keep it at CW with GC even offering to split the game nights and was told the decision had been made by the VH$L. Very unfair to the Coaches and players who have worked their tails off and played their hearts out for the RIGHT, yes right, to play at the venue of their choice.
I myself was told yesterday by the VH$L that Castlewood was too small to host a State game and I kindly reminded the lady it was plenty big enough year before last and she sorta stuttered and said she had no answer to my question. Then I politely reminded her that Clinchco, which if I'm not mistaken is smaller than CW's gym, was an acceptable place last year. Still she had no reasonable response!
But it's been decided by the almighty VH$L and I can assure you win or lose there will be a fired up bunch of Blue Devils take the floor in Bristol Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 and for the next 4 or so hours everything they have will be left on the court. So just make the nice drive to Bristol and cheer these young men and women on as they seek a victory in the face of injustice.
For this reason I hope GC stomps a mudhole in GW and then proceeds to walk it dry.
Coach Vermillion did fight tooth and nail to have the boys game played where the kids wanted to play. He is an exceptional coach and on top of that a really nice guy. Both GC teams need all the fans they can get in Bristol Saturday afternoon to show support for a bunch of kids who deserved better. BE THERE AND GO BLUE AND LADY BLUE!
